What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that supports bone, muscle, and immune health, as well as aiding in Calcium absorption. Our bodies can produce Vitamin D through exposure to the sun without sunscreen, but many people do not produce enough due to many factors. While a few foods contain Vitamin D, like fatty fish and egg yolks, dietary supplements can help fill possible nutrient gaps.†

Who should take a Vitamin D supplement?

Studies show that 95% of Americans do not consume enough Vitamin D from their diet alone, and nearly one third are Vitamin D deficient.[1,2] If you get less than 15 minutes of sun exposure per day without sunscreen, or have low Vitamin D levels, Vitamin D tablets, softgels or gummies are a great way to increase your Vitamin D intake.†

Explore expert answers to some of the most frequently asked vitamin D questions.

  • How do I know if I need to supplement with vitamin D?

Your personal healthcare professional can order a simple blood test to check your vitamin D levels. You may be at risk if you: • Experience less than 15-30 minutes of full body exposure sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. • Wear sunscreen. • Have a darker hue of skin color. • Are over 65 years of age. • Spend most of your time indoors. • Live in a region with a long winter season. • Are overweight or obese.
  • How does vitamin D help the immune system?

Researchers have found a significant role for vitamin D in the immune system. In fact, when we don't have enough vitamin D in our body, our immune system may not function at its best. That’s why we recommend having your vitamin D level tested with your healthcare professional so that they can help you decide on the vitamin D product that is right for you, especially if you have low vitamin D levels.
  • Where does vitamin D come from?

Sunlight provides the main source of our vitamin D requirements without sunscreen. Few foods naturally contain vitamin D, but those that do include certain fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel and sardines), fish liver oils and egg yolks.
  • I didn’t realize vitamin D had immune system benefits. How exactly does vitamin D work to support my immune system health?

Research suggests that Vitamin D may support our immune function because it has numerous effects on cells within the immune system, helping them to function optimally. Vitamin D receptors can be found on most immune cells suggesting a significant role for Vitamin D in the immune system. When we're not getting enough Vitamin D and our levels become low, our immune system may not function at its best. That's why we recommend having your Vitamin D level tested with a healthcare professional so they can help you decide on the Vitamin D product that is right for you, whether it be Vitamin D tablets, gummies, or softgels.
  • How much Vitamin D should I take per day?

The recommended daily intake of Vitamin D depends on many factors, such as age, skin color, and level of sun exposure. The Endocrine Society recommends dosages for adults ranging from 1500 to 2000 IUs per day to maintain Vitamin D levels, although dosages up to 10000 IUs may be needed to correct a Vitamin D deficiency.[3] Approximately 29% of U.S. adults are Vitamin D deficient (<50 nmol/L).
