Are there any drug interactions with lutein supplements?
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) including Omeprazole (Prilosec), Lansoprazole (Prevacid) decrease bioavailability of lutein. Supplemental lutein should be taken at least one hour before or after taking a PPI. Cholesterol lowering medications such as cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol (Colestid), and orlistat 2 (Xenical) may reduce absorption of fat soluble nutrients including lutein.
How much lutein can you take daily?
More recent studies indicate that 20-40 mg of lutein daily is an appropriate dosage. The presence of fat improves absorption of lutein from foods or nutritional supplements. Women who are pregnant or nursing should obtain lutein from food sources.
