What are some dietary sources of zinc?

Oysters, seafood, red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and organ meats are the best dietary sources. Milk, wheat germ, lima beans, almonds, and whole grains are good sources of zinc as well.

What causes zinc deficiency?

Contributing factors may include poor dietary intake, excessive intake of dietary phytates that bind zinc, some chronic illnesses, malabsorption and over-supplementation with iron or copper. Vegetarians may also run low in zinc, since they avoid consumption of animal sources which are good dietary sources of zinc. Stomach acid is needed for proper absorption of zinc; therefore, any health condition or medication that lowers stomach acid may also limit the availability of zinc.

What is zinc?

Zinc is an essential mineral for normal growth and development. Zinc also helps support the body's natural defense system.
